The Ghana Hydrological Authority (HYDRO) welcomed the Honourable Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, and the Deputy Minister, Hon. Giselle Tetteh-Agbotui, together with their entourage, on a familiarisation visit to the Authority.

The visit provided an opportunity for management to brief the delegation on HYDRO’s mandate, ongoing projects under the 2026 National Flood Control Programme, the Accra Flood Early Warning System (FEWS), and key challenges affecting the Authority’s operations.

In his presentation, the CEO of HYDRO, Dr. Sylvester Darko, highlighted the need for a proactive and integrated approach to flood and coastal risk management, combining conventional engineering interventions with nature-based solutions. He also outlined the Authority’s strategic priorities, including nationwide automation of surface water monitoring systems, integrated drainage management, resilient coastlines, and strengthened governance through the operationalisation of the National Hydrological Fund.

The Honourable Minister emphasised the importance of taking proactive measures to mitigate flooding, publishing the Authority’s interventions, and strengthening collaboration between HYDRO and the Ministry. He further encouraged technical staff to remain committed to their work amid the growing challenges posed by climate change.

In his closing remarks, the Minister reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to working closely with the Authority and supporting efforts to address its operational challenges.

The visit reinforces the importance of institutional collaboration, sustainable water resource management, and resilient infrastructure in building a safer and more flood-resilient Ghana.
