Overview

The Drainage Unit of the Ghana Hydrological Authority plays a critical role in Ghana’s national flood management and urban water infrastructure development. The unit is responsible for the planning, design, supervision, and maintenance of stormwater drainage systems across the country to reduce flood risks, protect infrastructure, and enhance environmental sustainability.

Working under the mandate of the Ghana Hydrological Authority established by the Hydrological Authority Act, 2022 (Act 1085), the unit contributes to the development of resilient drainage infrastructure and provides technical expertise to government institutions, metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies (MMDAs), as well as other stakeholders.

Roles and Functions

The Drainage Unit performs several key functions in support of national flood management and urban development, including:

  • Planning and design of stormwater drainage systems and flood control infrastructure.

  • Engineering analysis and hydraulic design of primary and secondary drainage channels.

  • Supervision and monitoring of drainage construction projects.

  • Drainage improvement and rehabilitation of existing drainage networks.

  • Technical advisory services on drainage engineering and flood mitigation.

  • Collaboration with local authorities in drainage planning and infrastructure development.

These functions contribute to the Authority’s broader responsibility of planning, designing, executing, operating, and maintaining flood control mechanisms and drainage improvement works nationwide
