About What We Do & How We Got Here
The Ghana Hydrological Authority ACT,2021(ACT,1085) established the Ghana Hydrological Authority (HYDRO) which is an organization under the Ministry of Works and Housing(MWH) to promote the delivery of hydrological services for planning, design, execution, operation and maintenance of flood control mechanism, works related to coastal engineering, drainage improvement and river development, operational and applied hydrology (monitoring all rivers and surface water bodies in Ghana) and to provide engineering solutions for related matters.
HYDRO is the national institution with responsibility for monitoring all rivers and surface water bodies in Ghana; providing engineering consultancy services in hydrology, water resources, drainage engineering, sewage engineering, coastal engineering and related fields for the Government.
Our Mandate
The Ghana Hydrological Authority (HYDRO), as the state institution, is responsible for the planning, design, execution, operation, and maintenance of flood control mechanisms, coastal engineering works, drainage improvement works, and operational and applied hydrology in the country. That is, programming and co-ordination of coastal protection works; construction and maintenance of storm drains countrywide; and the monitoring and evaluation of surface water bodies in respect of floods.
Mission
The Ghana Hydrological Authority(HYDRO) exists to promote hydrological service delivery with respect to planning, design, execution, operation and maintenance of flood control structures, sewer lines, drainage channel improvement, river development, operational and applied hydrology by means of technical know-how and ground-breaking strategies; for all people living in the country; and by reaching out to the general public by employing and establishing good public relations with them; being guided by our belief in integrity, transparency, efficiency, and prompt responsiveness to our clients.
Vision
To lead Ghana and beyond in integrated and quantitative hydrologic and atmospheric sciences and to develop the state-of-the-art engineering solutions to control both inland and coastal flooding to safeguard lives and properties.
Our Main Objectives
To provide hydrological assessments of watersheds, drainage, sewerage and coastal engineering services and to ensure the observance and maintenance of international standards and practices in hydrology, drainage, sewerage, and coastal engineering disciplines.

Operations of HYDRO
The operations of Ghana Hydrological Authority (HYDRO) are countrywide with the Head Office in Accra. The Regional Offices are in Hohoe (Volta and Oti Region), Kumasi (Ashanti and Brong Ahafo Regions), Takoradi (Western North and Western Region), Cape Coast (Centra Region), Tamale (Northern Region), Bolgatanga (Upper East and West Regions). Accra (Greater Accra and Eastern South Regions).
The organizations activities encompass the professional areas of Operational Hydrology, Drainage and Sewerage Engineering, Coastal Engineering, Land and Hydrographic Surveying, Quantity Surveying, General Administration, Finance and Accounting. HYDRO is headed by a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) with guidance from the Ghana Hydrological Authority Board.
Each Regional Office is managed by a professional engineer or hydrologist and supported by other key professionals and administrative staff. The organization employs people in varied professions due to the varied nature of its functions. The professional staff are Civil Engineers and Scientists with specialization in Coastal, Ports and harbor Engineering, Drainage and Sanitary Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, Hydrology, Water Resources Engineering, Geodetic Engineering and Quantity Surveying.

The Hydrology Department is responsible for monitoring surface water bodies, collecting hydrological data and providing analysis to support flood management, water resource planning and national development.
